We do not use AI on NIU websites to fabricate images of students, employees, campus scenes or events, or to depict moments that did not happen. Authenticity, not only copyright, is the reason we hold a high bar on AI-generated imagery and synthetic media.
Prospective students value authentic representations of campus life and can often recognize AI-generated content. Using AI-generated images can erode trust with our audience and create unrealistic expectations of the NIU experience.
Does Every Page Need an Image?
The primary purpose of most NIU webpages is to help users find information and complete tasks. Images should support that goal, not distract from it.
While some pages benefit from photography that reflects the NIU experience and helps prospective students envision themselves as Huskies, not every page needs a main image. In some cases, a decorative image can be distracting to users who are visiting a page to quickly find information.
In cases where a visual element would be beneficial but a large image isn’t necessary, consider using Font Awesome icons or glyphicons instead.
Where Can I Find Effective Images?
When an image would add value and context for your audience, we recommend using photography from our Canto image library. Real images of our people, places and events help build trust and accurately represent the Huskie experience. Learn more about photography at NIU.
If content is too abstract or sensitive to be represented by an image library photo, consider using a stock image before turning to AI. To request an image for print or online use, fill out our stock image request form.
For guidance on image size, format and related details, refer to the web team’s technical specifications quick reference guide.
When Would an AI Image Be Appropriate?
AI-generated images may be appropriate for instructional, research or conceptual purposes when no real-world representation is intended. These images should include a clear disclosure statement, such as: “AI-generated image for illustrative purposes.”
Contact the web team at webcommunications@niu.edu to request review of an AI-generated image intended for the website.
