Meet Brian Walk, Senior Web Developer

For more than 20 years, Brian Walk has helped guide NIU’s online presence with an emphasis on creativity and collaboration. Brian was first employed by NIU in 2001 as the lead interface designer for eLearning Services, a position that evolved into assistant director of what was then Outreach Creative Services. He stayed in that role until he joined the web team in 2016, where he currently serves as senior web developer.

With three degrees from NIU (a B.F.A. in visual communications, an M.S.Ed. in instructional technology and a graduate certificate in geographic information systems), Brian also has firsthand experience as an NIU student. The perspective he’s gained in his multiple roles has enabled him to bring both compassion and expertise to his work.

With a to-do list full of timely tasks and special projects, Brian’s workdays are never dull. His efforts help ensure that NIU websites are functional, accessible and usable, and often involve collaboration. His positivity and professionalism are appreciated by everyone he works with, from colleagues in the Division of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications to partners in the Division of Information Technology and across campus.

Brian welcomes the opportunities that come with the evolving field of web design, where there’s always something new to learn and new challenges to meet. Working at NIU has also had its benefits: “NIU has given has me opportunities to grow and accomplish more than I ever imagined when I first came here. I have learned skills that didn’t exist when I first started my career, been trusted with work critical to our recruitment and retention efforts, and been fortunate to work with some very talented people.”

In his free time, Brian enjoys working on home improvement projects, traveling, and relaxing with music, movies, and books.
