Web Accessibility and Neurodiversity

According to the CDC, about 13% of adults in the U.S. have a cognitive disability, which can affect how they interact with web content. Neurodivergent people may process language or visual content differently, making clear and consistent web design especially important. Here are a few ways to make your web content easier to navigate and understand.

Use Templates

Our standard Cascade templates address many issues that could present challenges for neurodivergent users. For example, they provide sufficient color contrast and a consistent navigation structure. This helps a neurodiverse audience navigate our site more easily.

Reduce Cognitive Load

Cognitive load refers to the amount of mental effort required to understand and use content. When pages are cluttered or overly complex, visitors may struggle to find the information they need.

To reduce cognitive load:

  • Ensure every page has a clear focus and remove unnecessary content.
  • Break text into manageable chunks.
  • Use descriptive headings to help visitors scan and locate information.
  • Use descriptive link text so visitors know where links will take them.

Make Content Easier to Read

Readability helps everyone, but it can be especially important for people with cognitive differences. Be sure to:

  • Use short paragraphs (typically three to five sentences).
  • Use plain language instead of jargon.
  • Spell out acronyms on first use.
  • Use bulleted and numbered lists when appropriate.

Accessibility Benefits Everyone

  • Clear headings help busy visitors scan pages.
  • Plain language helps prospective students and families unfamiliar with higher education terminology.
  • Consistent navigation helps first-time visitors explore our site.

Content designed with neurodivergent users in mind is easier for everyone to understand and navigate. By creating clear, predictable and inclusive digital content, we make NIU’s websites easier to use and help all visitors find the information they need.
