This spring, the web team completed a review of the NIU Web Standards. We identified and made several updates and clarifications to the standards, which we brought to the web steering committee for consideration. On June 27, 2023, the web steering committee approved the updated standards.

Privacy
Section 3.3 Privacy Policy was revised to indicate that college communicators are responsible for maintaining waivers for the release of student information on NIU websites. Text was also added to specify that employees’ personal email addresses shouldn’t be included on NIU sites. Provide their NIU email address instead.
Contact Blocks
Section 5.3 Navigation was updated to include guidance on what information should appear in contact blocks and to indicate that they shouldn’t contain photos.
Files and Forms
Some of the bulleted items in section 5.8.1 File Types were edited to reflect a preference for web forms and .shtml content to PDFs. Text was also added to indicate that when linking to a document on ISSUU, you should also provide a link to an accessible Word or PDF document, since ISSUU isn’t accessible.
